Overview

This position is remote through early September. Effective Monday, September 13th, this position is considered remote, up to 1 day in the office at 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA each week. DFCI guidelines state that employees must reside in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Rhode Island.

GENERAL SUMMARY: 

The Assistant Director of Principal & Major Gifts (PMG) raises funds from individuals, families, and family foundations for multiple myeloma and lymphoma research and care, as well as other priorities across Dana-Farber. The position reports directly to one Director of Principal & Major Gifts. The position’s primary focus is identifying, qualifying, and soliciting newly identified prospects for major gifts six figures+, payable over 1-5 years, and creating a pipeline of major gift donors. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting the entire Division with reaching financial goals.

Dana-Farber is currently in the largest and most ambitious fundraising effort in the Institute’s history – The Dana-Farber Campaign | Defy Cancer. Launched publicly in May 2021, the goal of the $2 billion campaign is to defy cancer at every turn and harness new techniques and technologies to prevent, treat, and defy cancer, resulting in more lives saved, more families intact, more dreams realized. Requirements

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage a dynamic portfolio of approximately 150 prospects and raise a minimum of $500K+ in the first full year. This portfolio presents exceptional opportunity to drive revenue beyond that target;
  • Fundraise for multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and specific disease centers and/or research areas as assigned, as well as Institute priorities; cultivate relationships with selected faculty and staff at these centers to accomplish goals;
  • Work strategically with faculty, staff, Trustees, and Philanthropy colleagues to identify, cultivate, close, and steward major gift prospects and donors;
  • Collaborate with colleagues on other teams, including Annual Giving, Planned Giving, Foundation Relations, Corporate Partnerships, Donor Relations, and the Jimmy Fund, to maximize donor engagement and philanthropic commitment;
  • Conduct 8-10 donor visits monthly;
  • Track prospect and donor activity in ClearView database; provide activity and revenue reports as requested;
  • Assist in planning of special events and forums, including annual Presidential Symposium. Responsibilities include coordinating faculty presentations, communication with co-chairs and attendees, and follow up;
  • With Director and Assistant Vice President (AVP) of PMG, develop annual fundraising goal; mid-year revision, year-end reporting, and other reporting as requested;
  • Develop recommendations to enhance fundraising to Director and AVP of PMG;
  • Travel to represent Dana-Farber as needed;
  • Complete other special projects as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reports to the Director of Principal & Major Gifts.  Shared supervision of one Assistant.  Works independently and as part of a team. 

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree with 5-8 years of Major Gift or leadership level Annual Fund experience required. Experience in healthcare a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Additionally, significant donor and volunteer experience, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills are necessary. Effectiveness in working with wide audiences (including highest level of Dana-Farber constituencies) and strong customer service will be key. Must exercise significant judgment and confidentiality in working with prospects, volunteers, donors and Institute staff. Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite required.

This position will evaluate current programs and create and execute approved plans to expand and diversify the donors and participants for the events assigned in order to broaden our donor base and create even more inclusive events. Experience with diverse donors is a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Typical office setting. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Frequent travel within Massachusetts, willingness to travel in the New England area and occasionally beyond New England as needed.
