Reporting to the Senior Director of Media Relations, the Associate Director of National Media Relations will help build Dana-Farber’s reputation and visibility by maximizing the Institute’s profile in the national and international media and assisting in overseeing high level, special media/communications projects.

The Associate Director is an integral team member of Dana-Farber’s in-house Department of Communications team and a leadership position within the department that will lead an energetic, proactive outreach program to engage top-tier reporters and influencers across the nation and the globe to illustrate how its world-renown scientific research and patient care are at the forefront of the field and leading the fight against cancer.  In addition, the Associate Director will help manage reputation/crisis issues and other promotion opportunities for the Institute.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a program to communicate regularly with top national and international reporters, to position Dana-Farber as a leader in the field, ensuring that the Institute is top of mind for current stories and long-term opportunities.
  • Develop and manage strong working relationships with the top reporters, editors and producers and maintain strong knowledge of the national and international media landscape.
  • Identify breaking news stories and reacting quickly to disseminate statements, interview availability and other assets to promote Dana-Farber and faculty expertise.
  • Conduct preparation/training to ensure that faculty and staff are well prepared for interviews.
  • Staff interviews, provide follow up information and track publication and measure results quarterly noting growth (when applicable) in coverage and performance against competitors.
  • Leverage national and international media coverage through social media engagement to extend the traditional media outreach.
  • Support the Senior Director of Media Relations with special projects.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; advanced education and/or training preferred.
  • 10 years of communications and media relations experience required, including demonstrated success with national media outreach and messaging/communications strategies, preferably in the fields of health care or biomedical research.
  • Proficiency with the major tools of the public relations profession required.
  • Deep understanding of the media landscape required.
  • A commitment to collegiality and professionalism required.
