The Flow Cytometry Tech I role is a primarily technical position. Incumbent will work in the DFCI Cytometry Cores - performing flow cytometric analysis, sorting and immunophenotyping by mass cytometry (CyTOF).  Must adhere to the applicable regulations & standards established by DFCI and EH&S.  Responsibilities include the operation, calibration and maintenance of Cytometer and related equipment, data acquisition, analysis, and documentation of results.  Maintenance of required regulatory documentation and participation in QC/QA/ activities.


Technical Duties and Responsibilities: Once trained

  1. Operation and maintenance of fluorescence-activated cell analyzers, cell sorters, and mass cytometers including data acquisition for patient and research samples, calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  2. Operation of cytometer-related computer hardware and software.
  3. Preparation and immunophenotyping of human cellular products for use in research protocols according to lab procedures.
  4. Preparation and maintenance of cytometry-related reagents.
  5. Data analysis, documentation, and maintenance of test results according to lab procedures.
  6. Performs cell culture & aseptic technique for cell sorting.
  7. Detect, troubleshoot, and correct instrument, reagent, and system failures.
  8. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instrumentation.

QA/QC/Regulatory Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Performs quality control duties.
  2. Perform and document QC/QA activities as defined in policies & SOPs. 
  3. Examine existing processes and problems and continuously look for way to improve them. Appropriate follow up & documentation 
  4. Work within the Flow Cytometry Core and Mass Cytometry Core guidelines and adheres to all regulatory standards within the Cytometry Core Facilities.
  5. Ability to enter & retrieve data from computer data bases & spreadsheets.

  • BS/BA required: a Biological Science or related field preferred.
  • 0-2-year experience in a research Flow Cytometry or Mass Spectrometry laboratory setting. 
  • Position requires an ongoing commitment to upgrading of job skills. Must be able to work closely with others & possess solid interpersonal & communication skills.
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced environment; effective in a diverse work group; willing to work in a rapidly changing work unit. 
  • Must possess good judgment, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • The ability to be flexible & adaptable to changing technology. 
  • Requires attention to detail and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with staff and physicians. 
  • Must be able to work independently. Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary.
