This Lab Manager role is responsible for facilitating a senior faculty member’s research program through management of the laboratory operations, including the management of some mice colonies. Responsibility will include assistance with PI’s administrative responsibilities in the laboratory and supervision of technical staff to manage and maintain good laboratory practice.  This individual will report directly to the PI and work closely with PI’s executive administrator, Research Science Manager and Department Administrator.

Laboratory Operations

  • Institute, maintain, and improve standard procedures for laboratory efficiencies, including monitoring laboratory expenditure.
  • Responsible for efficient management of mouse colonies through proper allocation of technical support resources as need in response to scientific need, in consultation with the scientific program manager
  • Responsible for overseeing efficient inventory maintenance and ordering. This includes flow antibodies, restriction enzymes, proteins, plasmids, and DNA to name a few.
  • Responsible, directly or indirectly, for care, repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure good laboratory practice directly or indirectly through supervised activities of technicians and trainees.
  • Familiarity with multiple Cell Biological and Molecular Biological assays required

Scientific Operations

  • Assist PI in monitoring, enabling and facilitate collaborations with other programs.
  • Active intellectual involvement in research projects is encouraged.
  • Ability to manage mice colonies, genotype, and conduct breeding.
  • Ability to conduct western blot, PCR, flow cytometry, and tissue culture.


  • Responsible for managing efficient and effective administration of laboratory protocols and research materials/stocks.
  • Train and manage staff scientists and research technicians and guide recruitment of technical staff.
  • Responsible for annual reviews of technical staff performance.
  • Assist PI with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees.
    • Ensures all lab staff are compliant with DFCI, NIH and sponsor mandatory trainings.   
  • Exceptional people management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to multi-task to enable many concurrent projects in a complex, fast paced environment.
  • Excellent quantitative, analytic, and problem solving skills to evaluate all aspects of a problem opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability and willingness to work closely with other colleagues as a team; experience and comfort in working with individuals with diverse backgrounds and differing viewpoints; openness to new ideas.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.        
  • Oversees needs of 12-14 lab members


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline required; Master’s or PhD degree preferred
  • Experience managing mice colonies is preferred
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in management of research laboratory in the field of biological sciences
  • Strong knowledge of HR activities and solid writing skills preferred
  • Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance, and record keeping
