Overview

The Media Relations Specialist will help maximize the visibility and reputation of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund to support a number of significant fundraising events and initiatives by helping strategize and secure print, online and broadcast media coverage for the participants and the event. This role is an integral part of the communications team. The Media Relations Specialist will assist with other department-related communications activities, respond to media inquiries/requests, and proactively pitch stories.

This position is partially remote with 2/3 days on site in the Fenway/Longwood Boston medical area.  Candidates  must reside in MA, NH or RI.

Requirements

  • Generate publicity for many Jimmy Fund/Philanthropy events by creating public relations materials on events, participants and initiative
  • Pitch reporters/outlets for event coverage using patient partner releases, home towners, and other appropriate materials
  • Facilitate tv coverage of events and participants by accompany television crews and reporters to the Institute and/or at event sites
  • Respond to and/or triage news media inquiries
  • Manage department's use of media database to generate/maintain media lists and track coverage, and provide advanced analytics reports
  • Oversee media relations interns by providing mentorship and training, managing workloads, and completing assessments as required by internship program and college/university
  • Serve as the departments' on-call representative in rotation with other team members
  • Assist with other media relations activities as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, journalism, English, or writing.
  • 3 years of professional communications experience; PR agency experience preferred.
  • Experience developing media targets, pitching reporters and understanding reporters’ needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong editorial and proofreading skills
  • Strong writing skills (e.g., press releases, backgrounders, etc., that are clear, concise and in accordance with Associated Press style)
  • Ability to propose creative new ideas and initiatives
  • Ability to effectively project manage, communicate progress, and identify areas of improvement for more efficient and effective processes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with departmental and Institute colleagues
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and to review and rearrange priorities on short notice
  • Ability to be a creative team player
