The Purchasing Specialist for Pharmacy provides inventory support to the Pharmacy Department, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Purchasing Specialist primary responsibility is to ensure we have the right drugs and supplies on-hand when and where we need them.  In addition, the purchasing specialist meets with representatives of pharmaceutical companies and drug wholesalers to: 1) review new product information; 2) resolve any supply related issues and 3) determine alternate vendors for unavailable products.

  • Responsible for determining the location of all items stocked in the Pharmacy and for the replenishment of all drugs and supplies, including those products needed for the infusion units, clinics and research laboratories.
  • Reviews all invoices for correct pricing, as well as updating the pharmacy computer systems with the correct pricing after resolving any discrepancies.
  • Selects the appropriate supplier based on price, delivery time, and other factors determined by pharmacy management.  This includes inter-hospital borrowing and loaning for emergency requirements, follow-up of after-hours transactions and reconciliation of accounts between the Dana-Farber Pharmacy and other hospital pharmacies at least quarterly.
  • Coordinates the rotation of the inventory to ensure that the amount of expired products is kept to a minimum.
  • Coordinates the returning of expired merchandise for credit and in determining the amount of individual items to be kept on the shelves, based on usage.
  • Participates in the annual inventory and helps coordinate the teaching of the proper techniques of inventory management to staff.


  • At least two years of college or equivalent business/inventory control experience.
  • Pharmacy technician or healthcare experience preferred.
  • Prioritization and organization of work
  • Possesses interpersonal communication skills
  • Attention to detail 
  • Experience with: Outlook, Excel, Word, and PeopleSoft
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to environmental changes
  • Team player - works well independently and within a group
