Overview

This position is responsible for facilitating a senior faculty member’s research program through management of the laboratory operations and specifically the management of grant timelines, lab deliverables, and collaborations with other entities. Responsibility will include assistance with PI’s administrative responsibilities in the laboratory and supervision of technical staff to manage and maintain good laboratory practice. This individual will report to the Associate Director of the Center for Early Detection and Interception of Blood Cancers and the PI and work closely with PI’s management team.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations

  • Institute, maintain, and improve standard procedures for laboratory efficiencies, including monitoring laboratory expenditure.
  • Responsible for overseeing efficient inventory maintenance and ordering. This includes flow antibodies, restriction enzymes, proteins, plasmids, and DNA to name a few.
  • Responsible, directly or indirectly, for care, repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure good laboratory practice directly or indirectly through supervised activities of technicians and trainees.
  • Execute agreement deliverables and aid in the development of critical workflows and procedure as they relate to various grants and contracts.

Tissue Banking, Center for Early Detection and Interception of Blood Cancers

  • Oversee that proper sample logging and processing SOPs are executed for all incoming blood and bone marrow samples from different biobanking efforts and clinical trials occurring at DFCI and with national/international collaborations.
  • Compile and maintain a comprehensive inventory system within relevant software solutions for sample/tissue custody and assist with curating sample record reports with researchers for different projects, while closely working with the clinical research team to ensure regulatory compliance in all workflows.
  • Supervise and actively communicate and problem-solve with a team of lab technicians assigned to variable roles in the lab.
  • Seek out new opportunities to improve/streamline current workflows and systems within the Ghobrial Lab.

Scientific Operations

  • Responsible for efficient management of agreement deliverables, sample/tissue custody and record keeping, aiding in the development of critical workflows and procedure as they relate to various grants and contracts, and improving/streamlining current workflows and systems within the Ghobrial Lab
  • Assist PI in proposing and facilitate collaborations with other entities
  • Active intellectual involvement in research projects is encouraged.
  • Ability to manage mice colonies, genotype and conduct breeding of multiple strains.
  • Ability to conduct a variety of library preparations for different sequencing workflows, western blot, PCR, flow cytometry, and tissue culture.

Administrative

  • Responsible for managing efficient and effective administration of laboratory protocols and research materials/stocks.
  • Responsible for the management and tracking of records and data generated from research efforts and, in particular, sequencing projects, in close collaboration with the data management team.
  • Responsible for generating, updating, and maintaining laboratory records and SOPs
  • Train and manage staff scientists and research technicians and guide recruitment of technical staff.
  • Responsible for annual reviews of technical staff performance.
  • Assist PI with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees.
  • Ensures all lab staff are compliant with DFCI, NIH and sponsor mandatory trainings.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience managing or facilitating data transfer or materials transfer agreements
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in research laboratory in the field of biological sciences
  • Excellent written and oral skills
  • Strong knowledge of HR activities preferred
  • Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance and record keeping
  • Experience with automation preferred
