Pain is a common and distressing complication of cancer across all phases of illness. Opioids are considered a cornerstone of cancer pain treatment. Studies of cancer and non-cancer populations show that patients from historically disadvantaged racial and ethnic groups, especially Black patients, are far less likely than White patients to receive opioids and receive lower doses. Despite decades of research documenting racial inequities in cancer pain treatment, much remains unknown about its magnitude and scope, the patients and communities most affected, and its most potent drivers. With support from a new 5-year R01 award from the NCI, our team of cancer care delivery and equity investigators, healthcare policy experts and statisticians is conducting a comprehensive analysis of inequities in opioid management among Medicare and Medicaid-insured patients across the cancer trajectory. By linking administrative data to comprehensive information about physicians, practices, health systems, and neighborhoods, we will examine racial and ethnic variation across versus within these levels, elucidating key mechanisms by which racism undermines equitable pain management. The project will be informed by an explicitly anti-racism framework, and guided by deep, longitudinal engagement with patient and professional stakeholders belonging to or predominantly serving communities of color.

We are seeking an individual to develop and implement specialized statistical techniques and statistical programming using SAS to analyze and manage administrative data for individuals enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. Preference will be given to individuals who also have proficiency with STATA, R, and/or other analysis programs. The data will be linked with other data, including the American Community Survey, the National Council for Prescription Drugs Pharmacy Identifier, and the Centers for Disease Control WONDER platform. Analyses will be conducted on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Virtual Research Data Center.


Specific responsibilities of this position include: manage various datasets, determine summary statistics, conduct hypotheses testing, estimate statistical models, report formats and other analysis considerations, determine and write statistical considerations and algorithms for protocol documents according to study design and appropriate statistical methods, prioritize and monitor data management tasks and data analysis projects, manage and maintain documentation of files and analyses, and provide statistical input and advice to collaborators or other staff. This person will make decisions about how to implement analysis and provide well written detailed reporting of results, including determination of proper summary statistics, report formats and other analysis considerations. He/she will summarize and present findings as reports, tables, graphs, and models, and will collaborate with faculty on manuscripts, abstracts, and other publications documenting study findings. He or she will be responsible for successful completion of these tasks within competing project timelines, and must ensure integrity of data collection, data review, data compilation, and analysis techniques. They must follow proper procedures for working with confidential data in compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines, including staying current with training requirements related to human subjects research and data security. This person must be able to work independently, as well as collaboratively with senior researchers and other research team members. The job is ideal for someone with an enthusiasm for empirical research and the ability and interest to learn new skills and take initiative as a project develops.



Advanced degree in economics, statistics or related quantitative field. The ideal candidate will have a strong quantitative background, experience working with large data sets and statistical and data management packages SAS and STATA. Previous experience with health care claims strongly preferred.  Strong PC skills and Excel expertise expected. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Must have ability to work independently with little supervision as well as part of team. A command of English language and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
