POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Senior Project Manager III leads high-profile, matrixed projects aligned with the Institute’s strategic plan and process improvement priorities, often spanning multiple divisions. This role involves planning and managing several projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget. Engaging with diverse stakeholders, including senior leadership, the manager drives project success and fosters cross-departmental collaboration, focusing on strategic outcomes and innovation. With proven technical expertise, they partner with engineering and development teams to mitigate risks and lead technology decisions, while also driving system architecture discussions, IT policy development, code reviews, and technical feasibility assessments.

Incumbent will report to the Manager of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) Information Services (IS) department Project Management Office (PMO), managing large projects identified by DFCI IS leadership while utilizing the PMO’s established project management methodology.

The focus of this position is: 1) manage large-scale initiatives, 2) represent the PMO with the use of the PMO’s proven methodologies and tools, 3) support DFCI staff in project management best practices through coaching, mentoring, and training, 4) communicate the PMO’s mission and purpose throughout the IS and user community, and 5) drive the deployment, support, and continuous improvement of standard project management tools, including templates and applications, throughout DFCI.

The incumbent will:
•work closely with a multi-disciplinary team including IT technical staff, business analysts, institute leaders, and external vendors/teams throughout each project
•establish and maintain respectful relationships with project sponsors and stakeholders
•become familiar with institute processes, strategic goals, and systems
•collaborate with the business in needs definition, business assessment, requirements gathering, vendor selection, resource allocation, project prioritization, risk analysis and mitigation, implementation, testing, training, and project closeout
•lead and assist teams in project design
•aid in the periodic review and auditing throughout a project’s lifecycle
•guide projects in process content, application of tools, and knowledge management
•proactively identify, analyze, mitigate, and manage risks
•regularly and proactively communicate with project stakeholders regarding schedule, status, issues, risks, scope changes, and milestone achievements

The estimated duration of this position is 24-36 months.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Scope and Complexity: Oversee highly complex projects with budgets exceeding $1M, critical to strategic objectives, involving multiple departments and external partners.
  • Strategic Leadership and Planning: Lead strategic decision-making with full accountability for project outcomes and resource management, collaborating with senior leadership to translate initiatives into detailed project plans that align with institutional priorities and ensure measurable success.
  • Analysis: Translate business processes into technical solutions, expertly guiding analysts in requirement gathering and performing analysis as needed.
  • Stakeholder Interaction and Communication: Engage with executive leadership and diverse stakeholders to drive project success and foster organizational collaboration.
  • Project Oversight: Lead planning, execution, and evaluation of large-scale projects, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget, while proactively managing portfolio impact.
  • Quality and Risk Management: Drive innovation and continuous improvement by aligning quality objectives with organizational goals, while proactively identifying, analyzing, and managing risks to minimize issues and enhance project success.
  • Vendor Management: Lead large vendor selections and implementations involving multiple vendors.
  • Mentorship and Development: Mentor project teams, promoting professional growth and a culture of excellence.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Extensive experience in project management, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects successfully.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on strategic thinking and innovation.
  • Expertise in project management software and templates, with a strong application of project management methodologies and scheduling solutions such as MS Project
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions.
  • High success in applying complex IT concepts in application development and support, networking, system integration, and information security.
  • Expertise with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Champion of formal project management methodologies, including waterfall, spiral, agile, lean, DMAIC, etc.
  • Accomplished written and verbal communications skills with staff through leadership of varying levels of technical aptitude, translating business needs into technical solutions and driving decisions

Education Required

Bachelor's Degree

Area of Study Required

Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Experience Required

Ten (10) years of relevant experience with progressively increasing responsibility of which at least six (6) years must be in project management OR comparable roles.

License/Certification/Registration Required

Project Management Professional (PMP) or Program Management Professional (PGMP) certification required, with expectation to maintain credential.
