Overview

This position is fully onsite Monday through Friday 7am-3:30pm and will be a part of the 24-hour on-call rotation with the other Facilities managers.

Reporting to the Senior Director, the Plumbing Supervisor is primarily responsible for leading, coordinating, and supervising all plumbing-related operations and maintenance across the LMA and Chestnut Hill campus. This role ensures efficient delivery of plumbing services, compliance with applicable codes and safety standards, cost control, and quality workmanship.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead 24/7 plumbing operations and staff, managing schedules, coverage, and performance to ensure uninterrupted service. Direct daily field activities, generate work orders, assign tasks to mechanics, and set departmental priorities. Ensure preventive maintenance and repairs are completed safely, on time, and to quality standards.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot all water-related systems, including RODI, pH neutralization, domestic (potable and non‑potable), sprinkler, and drainage systems. Ensure system reliability, compliance with codes and institutional standards, and timely coordination of corrective actions and upgrades.
  • Oversee medical gas, compressed air, and vacuum systems to ensure safe, reliable operation and full compliance with regulatory requirements. Manage testing, maintenance, documentation, and incident response. Coordinate with clinical stakeholders to minimize operational impact and ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Develop, revise, and implement preventive maintenance procedures and SOPs that enhance equipment performance and ensure Joint Commission compliance. Use maintenance data to optimize intervals, reduce downtime, and improve documentation quality. Partner with the Energy Manager to establish and monitor energy conservation programs and recommend operational improvements.
  • Manage all plumbing contracts and vendor activities, defining scopes of work, monitoring performance, ensuring safety and compliance, and controlling costs. Collaborate with the Senior Director of Engineering and Facilities Operations on operating budgets, capital planning, and future equipment upgrades. Drive procurement and project coordination to meet schedule and quality goals.
  • Ensure institutional and regulatory compliance, including EPA requirements such as parking garage oil‑water separator systems. Serve as the departmental liaison for plumbing quality and operations, communicating status, risks, and improvements to DFCI stakeholders. Represent the department on relevant institutional committees, including the Animal Care Committee, Maintenance Safety Committee, Fire/Life Safety Committee, Chemical Emergency Response Team, and others as needed.
  • Supervise staff. Hire, develop, and manage staff to achieve organizational goals. Set clear expectations, deliver feedback, and monitor performance for quality, efficiency, and compliance with policies and procedures. Mentor staff, foster career growth, and cultivate a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong technical knowledge of commercial/institutional plumbing systems, codes, and standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles related to planning, resource allocation, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Ability to assess the relative costs and benefits of actions and make appropriate decisions.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and timing to ensure minimal downtime and cost-effective operations in a hospital environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and interpret and adhere to established standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Self-starter with initiative to identify and resolve issues proactively.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS Diploma/GED required. 
  • Valid plumbing license (Journeyman or Master, depending on jurisdiction).
  • 5 years plumbing experience, with demonstrated supervisory leadership responsibilities required. Union management experience preferred.
  • Experience managing budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
  • People management experience.
  • Experience in a hospital, labs, or institutional facilities environment.
