Overview

The Department of Data Science at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is conducting a search for a Biostatistician(s). This person(s) will collaborate with medical researchers and fellow biostatisticians in study design, development, and analysis of cancer studies which could include animal, cell line or other pre-clinical designed experiments, prospective clinical trials, translational studies, retrospective studies, surveys, chart review studies or the analyses of data from large databases.

The Department of Data Science at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is aimed at driving cancer research through innovation and collaboration in the quantitative sciences. The department is unified by a commitment to improving cancer care through data-driven approaches. We strive to understand the biology of cancer, test the efficacy of treatments and extract knowledge from complex datasets.

Position Summary:

Responsible for statistical aspects of study/experiment design, quality of data, identification of appropriate tests and models, data analysis and visualization, assuring quality of results alongside an ability to communicate effectively with collaborators and other team members.

Develop and maintains analysis codes with all required annotations and documentation, ensuring reproducibility of results and usability by other statisticians and team members.

Responsible for contributing to clinical and scientific reports, grant developments, progress reports, publications, and presentations at scientific conferences.

Works independently and collaborates with a multidisciplinary research team of data scientists, investigators and other collaborators across multiple projects.

  • Data Analysis: Performs more complicated data analyses and report writing. Responsible for assuring quality of data, reproducibility of analyses and proper interpretation of results. Plans, implements, summarizes and disseminates analyses, with diminishing guidance from the supervisor and/or mentor.
  • Study Design: Meets with collaborators around study planning; designs relatively complicated studies with additional guidance. Is well-versed in the context of scientific collaborations.
  • Service to Dana-Farber and Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center: Participate in protocol review process for the Scientific Review Committees (SRC) and the Institutional Review Board (IRB), under the guidance of the supervisor and/or mentor. May assume some responsibility on organizational, departmental committees, or scientific events.
  • Manuscript Preparation: Edits and reviews entire manuscript, including response to reviewers and revision, with minimal guidance.
  • Grant Preparation: Helps to formulate specific aims, explains options for experimental design, and develops data analysis plans.
  • Research Portfolio Management: Develops timelines and components for larger projects; masters multi-tasking so that complex projects involving many interdisciplinary individuals move forward smoothly.
  • Team interactions: Offer peer-to-peer training for new statisticians in design, analysis, and presentation of results. It is expected that insight into career growth will be offered to more junior statisticians.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Computational Skills: Knowledge of UNIX/Linux and statistical software such as R or SAS
  • Statistical Skills: Expert in statistical methodology, and the use of statistical software, coding, data analysis and effective presentation of results. Able to implement standard study designs. Understands the nuances of data wrangling and ability to use sound principles of reproducible research methods. Able to independently perform most standard analysis methods and assess underlying assumptions
  • Collaboration: Able to discuss and present designs and results., share ideas accurately and communicate them effectively, both in writing and verbally with minimal oversight

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

The position requires a master’s degree in statistics or biostatistics, along with 2 years of relevant experience.

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
