The Lead Workday Extend Engineer is the technical owner of the Workday Extend platform and serves as the enterprise authority for designing, delivering, and governing custom applications built on Extend. This role partners with senior functional, security, integration, and architecture leaders to solve highly complex business problems while ensuring solutions align with Workday’s delivered capabilities and long-term roadmap. The Lead Engineer defines standards, architecture patterns, and governance for Extend development and is accountable for solution quality, security, and sustainability. In addition to hands-on engineering, this role mentors other engineers and influences technical strategy across the Workday ecosystem.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the enterprise technical lead and subject matter expert for the Workday Extend platform.
- Own Extend solution architecture, development standards, and governance models.
- Lead the design and delivery of complex, cross-functional Extend applications from concept through production support.
- Partner with functional, integration, and security leaders to ensure solutions align with Workday best practices and compliance requirements.
- Architect and implement secure, scalable integrations using Workday APIs, events, and orchestration frameworks.
- Establish and enforce SDLC, testing strategies, and release management across Workday tenants.
- Provide technical leadership through code reviews, design guidance, mentoring, and escalation support.
- May supervise staff.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Expert-level mastery of Workday Extend, including UI frameworks, Orchestrations, data services, and event-driven architecture.
- Deep understanding of Workday security, business process framework, tenant strategy, and data privacy controls.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate when to extend Workday versus use delivered configuration or integrations.
- Strong architectural and design skills in complex, highly integrated enterprise environments.
- Experience operating in regulated industries with strong change control and audit requirements.
- Proven leadership as a senior individual contributor influencing technical direction without direct people management.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to executive and non-technical audiences.
Minimum Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field required.
- Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in enterprise application development or Workday technical roles required.
- Proven experience leading the design and delivery of production-grade Workday Extend applications required.
- Workday Pro Certification – Extend (active or ability to obtain within 1 year).
License/Certification/Registration Required: None

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate’s relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
