Overview

The Outpatient Coder I reviews and abstracts icd-10 codes per the outpatient coding guidelines. Reviews CCI and LCD/NCD edits for all lab accounts.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communicates directly with physicians to ensure that clinical documentation is coded timely, accurately and in compliance with CMS guidelines and national correct coding initiatives.

  • Reviews patients encounters for accurate code assignment of all relevant diagnosis, procedures, and modifiers.

  • Resolves coding edits by performing second review of medical record documentation and code assignments.

  • Assign appropriate modifiers and apply guidelines as indicated through the limited coverage diagnosis (LCD), as well as the national correct coding initiative (CCI)

  • Collaborates with Patient Accounting to solve denials, billing, and coding issues.

  • Assists in educational sessions and participates in team meetings as requested by management.

  • Maintains coding knowledge and skills through attending continuing education activities and reviewing pertinent literature, attending institutional coding meetings, AAPC/AHIMA seminars, and other educational forums.

  • Meets or exceeds department production and accuracy standards.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of coding and billing rules and regulations.

  • Knowledge of software applications, including Microsoft Office and billing and coding software.

  • Some knowledge of hospital / physician coding software.

  • Some knowledge of CMS coding regulations.

  • Ability to lead by example.

  • Ability to be a dependable self-starter, able set priorities, manage multiple data needs, and meet appropriate deadlines.

  • Able to work well independently on a team and as a trainer/facilitator.

  • Flexible with ability to adapt to changing work assignments. 

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years of outpatient coding/billing experience required. 
  • Must pass pre-employment coding test.
  • Experienced in ICD-10, HCPCS and CPT coding, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

License/Certification/Registration:

  • CCS/CPC certification required.
