Overview

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Exercise Trainer will serve as an interventionist on multi-institution research studies designed to assess the impact of diet and exercise intervention programs and will also work with other members of the study team to coordinate intervention delivery and data entry per study protocol. The Exercise Trainer will meet with patients through in-person exercise sessions on site at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and through virtual exercise sessions as needed based upon clinical or research study demands. The Exercise Trainer may also be responsible for providing individualized patient exercise consultations, assessments, and exercise programming as part of clinical and/or research projects. Preferred afternoon/evening/weekend availability.

•This position’s work location is hybrid. The selected candidate may only work remote days from a New England state (ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI).

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with clinical and/or study participants, via in-person and telehealth training sessions to support exercise training.

  • Follows established policies, protocols and procedures. After successful completion of required training, provides assistance with implementation of the study protocol.

  • Reviews and implements the intervention in collaboration with investigators and the research team in ways consistent with the goals of the research protocol, exercise oncology, and behavioral medicine principles, needs of the individual participants, and governing policies and procedures. 

  • Maintains communication with study participants and staff via phone, email, text, and during study meetings as needed.

  • Meets with study PI, and other study investigators to review participants’ progress, challenging cases, treatment fidelity, and counseling strategies to maximize adherence and retention.

  • Participates in quality improvement activities. 

  • Completes other study-related tasks as assigned.

  • Ensures a safe environment and maintains equipment and supplies in a clean, operable and safe manner.

  • Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and infection control procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated understanding of special needs and behaviors of age groups of the population served.

  • Basic understanding of health care clinical operations.

  • Excellent time management and communication skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with staff as well as all other oncology interdisciplinary team members.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science or a related field required.

  • Master's degree in exercise science or related field, or equivalent relevant experience in exercise oncology is preferred.

  • 3 years of related experience required.

  • Oncology Certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (or ability to obtain this in the first 3 months of employment) required.

  • Experience with adult cancer patients and/or chronically ill patients preferred.

None

  • Works with the adult patient population.
